Here at That’s So Creative, we always appreciate our talents’ hard work and dedication. That is why we would love to introduce you to Elizabeth Allen or, we like to call her, Liz. She is one of our graphic designers on the team. We’re telling you, working with her has been a breeze. So, why don’t we get to know her and find out how she manages her day-to-day work at one of the top creative agencies in Chicago.
1. What is your main role at That’s So Creative?
I’m a graphic designer.
2. How long have you been working in graphic design?
Started working professionally in late 2012, so about 7 years with a year off due to the pandemic.
3. What does a typical day look like for you as a graphic designer?
Definitely have to start off with some sort of beverage, decaf coffee or a smoothie or something, to get the proverbial juices flowing. Check my planner (first time in my life I actually use a planner, sad to say!) & our workflow program at due dates, and my own agenda for projects. I start ticking off the ones with the closest due date and work from there. Check with others via Slack if I have questions or need clarification. Give myself a break to stop any creative blockage from happening — usually hug my 2 cats or scroll through Dribbble. It’s back to work until I hit a sweet spot in the day or I’ve finished a project & hit send. I try to add in an hour of yoga during the day or after I’m finished with work for that day. My lower back thanks me for it after sitting for so long. Dinner, bed, then waking up fresh (thanks to white noise playlists)!
4. What is your favorite project so far working with That’s So Creative?
I had the pleasure of working for a CBD company that was all about fun & sparkly visuals. The team and I worked together to create marketing emails and social media ads. Being able to start completely fresh and create something totally new is such a plus when it comes to projects. I was able to build email templates with limited boundaries (and that is a dream for creatives!).
5. What has your experience been with That’s So Creative’s company culture?
It’s been a complete 180° from previous jobs I’ve worked at. I lost my full-time job due to the pandemic in early 2020, and even though it was a truly uncomfortable event, I was finally allowed time to ask myself what I wanted in a job. Did I want to work a job or did I want a job to work for me? After a few months, I realized I valued free time to be creative, which I hadn’t ever had before. Working at TSC, I am able to set my own schedule and work hours. This allows me to have time to explore my creative side and gather inspiration. You don’t get that at your typical 9-to-5 (or at least in my experience). I am also able to fully work from home. Being able to work together with other like-minded people is a plus as well. We all in some way shape or form came from or have an appreciation for creativity and that to me is irreplaceable.
6. How have you grown professionally while on our team?
At TSC, I have been able to unlock my own creative side without second-guessing myself. Imposter syndrome is a real thing and I’ve dealt with that for years. I am allowed space to drum up some ideas that don’t always take the back seat. Being able to voice my opinions and concerns in a space that is open to hearing them, and knowing that they hold value. All of this has made me into a more confident graphic designer.
7. As a graphic designer, what is your go-to tool? And, why?
Pencil and paper! This is what I start with for each project. I always need to literally draw out my ideas. From there, I take it to Illustrator or Photoshop, but it always starts out on a piece of paper.
8. What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
Yoga! I’ve been practicing for 4 years now and have slowly gotten better over time. It’s not as intimidating as a gym but you still get sweaty and build muscle. I’ve been thinking about getting a teacher certification down the line. I also enjoy exploring the outdoors. I live in a concrete jungle so it’s always nice to get out into nature and breathe fresh air. A memorable trip I had with my husband was spending a weekend at Starved Rock State Park. Hiking trails, kayaking, fishing, and camping are some of my favorite things to do!
9. What’s your workplace motto?
Trust your gut. If something’s not right, speak up immediately. If you’ve been stewing, take action before it boils over! (I guess that’s 3 mottos, oops).
What do you think her secret is? We are sure it’s the hugs from her cats and, maybe, her great communication and organization skills!
